Built for the field, not the office

BuiltWright Calculators is a focused set of tools built by a finish carpenter who got tired of ad-stuffed apps and bloated calculators that get in the way of the work.

Common questions

Are the calculators really free?

Yes. All of the calculators on this site are free to use, with no signup, no account, and no email required. The Android app is also free, and stays free. No ads, no in-app purchases, no premium tier.

Is there an iOS version?

Not yet. The app is Android-only at launch. iOS may come later. In the meantime, all the calculators work in any browser, including iPhone Safari.

Do I need an internet connection?

The web calculators need a browser, which means an internet connection to load the page. The Android app works fully offline once installed. No signal, no problem.

Do you collect any data?

The Android app collects no personal information. Calculations and history stay on your device.

This website uses standard analytics tools (Squarespace's built-in analytics and Google Analytics) to understand site traffic. These use cookies but collect no personally identifying information.

The calculators themselves don't store or transmit anything you enter. Numbers stay in your browser.

What is a board foot?

A board foot is a unit of lumber volume equal to 144 cubic inches. It's the standard measurement for buying and selling hardwoods. A board that's 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long is exactly 1 board foot.

The Board Foot Calculator handles the math for any dimensions and quantities, including price per board foot for total cost.

What's the 4-inch sphere rule for balusters?

The International Residential Code (IRC) requires that gaps between balusters in a guard rail be small enough that a 4-inch sphere cannot pass through. This prevents children from getting their heads stuck or falling through.

The Baluster Calculator checks your layout against this rule automatically and flags any spacing that would fail.

Can I use these calculators for trades other than carpentry?

Yes. The math is universal. Painters use the area calculator for wall coverage, drywallers use it for surface estimates, flooring installers use it for square footage, fence builders use the baluster calculator for picket spacing, and so on. The calculators don't care what trade you work in.

Why are these calculators ad-free?

BuiltWright Calculators is built and maintained by BuiltWright Softworks, a small studio that builds software for the trades. The main BuiltWright app is a paid product for contractors. The calculators are free because they're useful tools that introduce people to what BuiltWright is about. No ads, no tracking, no upsells.
